Kindergarten

The kindergarten program is developed around a variety of themes relating to children's interests with set curriculum requirements integrated into each theme. The program incorporates a balance between play and structured activities. Daily activities include circle time, crafts, early literacy, early numeracy, social studies, science related activities, centers, music, recess, daily physical education, library, computers, and cooperative play. Kindergarten participates and is involved in school assemblies, school concerts performances and special event or spirit days throughout the year.

Early Literacy in Kindergarten

The Early Literacy in Kindergarten Program (ELK) is designed to assist young children in achieving the skills necessary to be successful readers. Children receive small group instruction (maximum of 4) for 40 minutes, once a week, during April and May. The program covers concepts about print, letter and sound identification, rhyming and shared writing.

Regular Program

A. L. Horton Elementary offers a regular English program in 14 classrooms.  A. L. Horton School offers French in grades 4, 5, and 6. The grade 6 music program is unique in that it allows all students to try various band instruments. The students have band instruction for half of the year and a traditional music program for the other half.

Early Reading Intervention

This program is designed for Grade 1 students who are having difficulty with reading and reading comprehension. E.R.I. teachers identify students and work with them individually for half an hour, 4 to 5 times a week, for a period of 16 to 20 weeks.

Balanced & Comprehensive Literacy

Grade 1-6 classrooms follow a structured model for language learning. The Balanced Literacy and Comprehensive Literacy programs are research based and embrace good teaching practices. The school's literacy focus incorporates the 6+1 Traits of Writing program to increase overall student proficiencies in writing.
