Field Fun Day & Lunch with Your Child Day

We are into our final five weeks of the school year and while we have much yet to do, there is also much to celebrate.

  • Grade 6 students wrote part A of their Language Arts Provincial Achievement Test last week. Their stamina, creativity, and application of story writing and newspaper writing skills are to be commended! Many thanks to their teachers this year and in all previous years for purposeful work on writing and reading which are so closely connected.
  • Leah Atcheynum was in classes last week and again this week with teachings about indigenous plants, medicines, and teas. Students have been curious and open to tasting flavours from the land.
  • May 31 is Lunch with Your Child Day. We hope parents and caregivers can join us for a picnic outside (we will be monitoring the weather and air quality), in the gym, and/or in classrooms from 12:20 - 12:50 PM. Parents/caregivers wishing to buy a hot dog can visit the hot lunch website and indicate which child’s classroom to send hot dogs to.
  • June 6 is the Volunteer Lunch. Please watch your email and child’s backpack for an invitation. We are incredibly grateful for all the field trip, hot lunch, school council, fundraising society, and classroom volunteers. We could not run special events or provide extra assistance to students without you.
  • Welcome to Mrs. Zelenko who will be working as an educational assistant in LINKS in May and June.

FIELD FUN DAY - JUNE 8

Save the date for this year’s outdoor sports and activities event on June 8. The committee has planned a variety of active challenges for students of all levels.

The Friends of A.L. Horton Fundraising Society is hosting a snacks/treats concession at this year’s Field Fun Day.

  • Fundraising Event - Field Fun Day Concession

    • Volunteers: 6-10 parents/caregivers to help set up, serve foods, handle monies, and clean up between 9 AM - 3 PM
    • The more the merrier to celebrate the year end with the kids!

HELMETS FOR RIDERS

It’s great to see many students active and arriving by bike and scooter this spring. Children and parents can check out helmet laws and safety information for riding bikes, scooters, and rollerblades at this link

AIR QUALITY HEALTH INDEX - MONITORING FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

We continue to monitor the air quality for student health and wellness. A general rule is at level 7 or higher, students may stay indoors.

SCHOOL EDUCATION PLAN FOR 2023/2024

Our three goals for next school year relate to writing instruction and student success, small group math instruction and student achievement, and an appreciation of diversity. We’d appreciate your thoughts and ideas related to goal #3. Please click on this link to give feedback on the following goal wording:

  • An intentional focus on diversity of ethnicity, language, race, ability, identity, ancestry, and interests will increase student awareness, understanding, and appreciation of our similarities and differences as measured by student surveys and a schoolwide diversity writing and drawing task in fall and spring.
